I have issues with Chris Martin. He just bugs me to no end: his Bono worship, his marriage to Gwyneth, his ragamuffin military ensemble (what is that all about anyway? they are the silliest looking outfits!), and the fact that when I’ve heard him live he – uh – doesn’t sound quite the same as he does in the studio.
For a long time I refused to even listen to Coldplay because of my intense anti-love for Mr. Martin. But then I kept hearing songs and secretly enjoying them and I got some CD’s from the library and borrowed one or two from my mom, and went through a big Coldplay conversion earlier this year. It helped that it occured in late winter when things were grey and cold and it felt like English weather and their music lends itself well to that sort of state.
But I really can’t watch him in perform. It makes me nuts. For one thing he clearly has watched way too many U2 performances and wants to be Bono so badly it makes me cringe. For another he’s just totally spastic on stage, it distracts me from the music because I can’t stop saying “what is wrong with him??” I don’t even know the other guys in the band – I don’t even know how many of them there are! I’m too busy getting annoyed by Chris Martin then trying to ignore my annoyance so I can enjoy the music.
Good god “Lovers in Japan” is a great song.

Not a fan of Coldplay personally — but what you describe is how I feel about Celine Dion. She has a nice voice – but I can’t watch her perform. At all. EVER! LOL
She is pretty annoying. I’ve mellowed on CM a bit. I used to *loathe* him. Now – eh. I just try to listen to the songs and not think about him at all!
I agree some of the songs knock me out but…watching him is creepy.
