Naked Eyes were an English duo that spawned this hit remake of a Burt Bacharach song, and at least one other one I liked called Promises Promises. Wikipedia calls them “British Synthpop” which are two of my favorite words in the English language when paired together.
This video has such an early 80′s/London feel to it and the storyline is so very Lady Diana with the wedding and the press chasing after the Meryl Streep-esque heartbreaker. The Guy Who Doesn’t Sing gets to play duel roles as the editor chasing this story/husband of the heartbreaker who is being longed for by The Guy Who Sings/reporter following her story.
It has drama, romance, heartbreak, longing and fashion in one tidy little 3+ minute storyline – it’s kinda perfect.
(Now that I’ve seen Promises Promises again I wonder why they weren’t bigger. That guy has a great voice and he even has a psuedo 80′s English Popstar Mullet! Also – this is going on my Killers Covers Wishlist: a song about betrayal? A video about murder? Sounds right up their alley!)

Definitely one of my Top 5 80s tracks. I love the mood that the song gives me. I can’t even describe it, but the video is perfect for it.
Great blog topic! That song is definitely going to be in my head all night now. My personal favorite 80’s music video comes from another “synthpop” song, namely Aha’s take on me. Remember that one? It’s the one where the girl jumps into a drawing with the kind of hot guy from the band, and, then, the two go racecar driving together. Who knew pencil drawings could be so sexy? All I could ever draw were stick figures. You can’t exactly go out racing, when your driving partner has no knees . . . or wrists for that matter.
But of course! Did you ever see “The Sun Always Shines on TV” which started as a sort of “sequel” to “Take on me”? I luurved a-ha. They were my only deviation from Cute English Boys in Bands – but only by being Cute Norwegian Boys in Bands ;-p
